Merlin the moggy who can purr as loud as a lion's roar
Merlin is as loud as a classroom of chattering children, a London Underground train, or the sound of a car horn 25ft away
A moggy called Merlin is in line to be crowned the world’s loudest cat.
The ear-splitting pet can conjure up a wizard purr measured at 100 decibels.
That makes Merlin as loud as a classroom of chattering children, a London Underground train, or the sound of a car horn 25ft away.
Owner Tracy Westwood, 47, said: “When I’m on the phone I often have people asking me what on earth the noise is. But I guess I’m used to it.”
The average cat purrs at 25dB.
But mum-of-two Tracy said: “We’ve measured Merlin at peaks of 100dB but he can be louder than that.”
Puss Smokey, from Northampton, is the Guinness world record holder at 92dB.
Now Tracy, of Torquay, Devon, is aiming to have her 12-year-old animal rescue pet officially recognised as the purring champ.
Sound experts say noise levels of 90dB to 95dB can result in hearing loss after prolonged exposure.
